I hope your new year is off to a great start. I write to provide you with an update on MPS’s superintendent search.

While we initially intended to have a permanent superintendent in place by July 1, 2023, last night the MPS School Board voted to move that timeline back one year – to the start of the 2024-2025 school year. We debated the benefits and challenges of both continuing on our current timeline or extending it – and ultimately decided to take more time to perform one of the board’s most important tasks. 

We look forward to continuing our current engagement activities this month around what the community wants to see in a superintendent – the survey and listening sessions – and will then determine what additional feedback we need to secure over the spring and summer. In the fall of 2023, with the help of an executive search firm, we plan to start recruiting superintendent applicants so a permanent superintendent is in place to start with MPS on July 1, 2024, for the 2024-2025 school year. 

This vote means we will need to continue with an interim superintendent for another year, so I will be working with Rochelle Cox in the coming weeks to bring a contract extension for another interim term forward for board approval. I am grateful for Interim Superintendent Cox’s willingness to continue serving MPS during this transition period, and for her ongoing leadership and focus on our students.

Espero que su nuevo año haya tenido un gran inicio. Les escribo con motivo de proporcionar una actualización sobre la búsqueda de superintendente para MPS.

Si bien inicialmente tuvimos la intención de tener un superintendente permanente para el 1º de julio de 2023, anoche, la Junta Directiva Escolar de MPS votó para retrasar ese cronograma por un año, hasta el inicio del año escolar 2024-2025. Debatimos los beneficios y desafíos de continuar con nuestro cronograma actual o de extenderlo, y, finalmente, decidimos tomar un tiempo mayor para realizar una de las tareas más importantes de la junta directiva.

Esperamos continuar este mes con nuestras actividades de participación actuales en torno a lo que la comunidad quiere ver en un superintendente, encuesta y sesiones de escucha, y luego determinaremos qué comentarios adicionales necesitamos obtener durante la primavera y el verano. En el otoño de 2023, con la ayuda de una firma de búsqueda de ejecutivos, planeamos comenzar a reclutar candidatos a superintendente, de modo que un superintendente permanente sea establecido con nosotros el 1º de julio de 2024 para comenzar el año escolar 2024-2025.
