Board appoints new member, interim superintendent
Tuesday, May 10, 2022 8:50 PM

The Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) Board of Education tonight appointed Cynthia Booker to complete the remainder of the vacant at-large school board seat term, which runs until Jan. 3, 2023. The board also voted unanimously to appoint current MPS Associate Superintendent Rochelle Cox as interim superintendent for the 2022-2023 school year. Her new position begins on July 1, 2022. She will continue in her current position until that time.

Booker is a MPS graduate and brings extensive experience including community-based executive leadership, finance and workforce development. She will join the board at its May 24 meeting.

Associate Superintendent Cox has been with MPS since 1997, when she joined the Early Childhood Special Education department. She has since served in several leadership positions, including recently as Executive Director of Special Education and Health Services. In her current role as Associate Superintendent, Ms. Cox supports 21 elementary schools and their principals.

With an interim superintendent plan in place, the board will now work to develop a process to select the next permanent superintendent, which will include student, staff and community input as well as priorities defined by the board.
